Okupas is an experimental fictional mini-series based on the real world in the slum neighbourhoods of Buenos Aires. Actors, technicians and directors from the production team interwove fiction with reality, taking great risks in order to show the seamy side of Buenos Aires. Okupas made a clean sweep with the best critics from the Argentine press who unanimously chose it as the best fictional TV programme of 2000. It was shown on channel 7 (the only state-owned channel with a cultural profile) towards the end of 2000. From this channel Okupas managed to compete with the large commercial networks of Argentina, positioning itself as a cultural programme attaining a rating of five for the average share of the channel. Okupas was declared to be of cultural interest by the Cultural Secretary of the Presidency of the Nation.
