'An anonymous donor, half a century ago in Britain, regularly masturbated into a cup and made a gift of his sperm to women he'd never met. One of them was my mother.' From that first line of script, you know Offspring is going to be different from the usual search for one's identity. Part mystery story, part road movie, Canadian film maker Barry Stevens' quest for the man he refers to as 'the ancient masturbator whose name is written on every cell of my body' is at times deeply poignant, very strange, and hugely entertaining. Stevens is one of the first products of a sperm bank, and not only does he want to find his biological father, he wants to find his siblings, all 100 or 200 of them. His quest leads to a fascinating community of émigré scientists and intellectuals that flourished in London in the 40s and 50s. Offspring is an emotional detective story of extraordinary twists and turns, full of bizarre characters, successes, disappointments, and an ending only Hollywood could dream up.
