Jim, a teacher in a school in London, is a homosexual. His life is split into two parts: the school, where he is deeply committed to his job, and his private life which he spends in gay clubs and in the houses of various friends. He fails to create a meaningful and satisfactory relationship with anyone. He continues to search for ways of integrating his personal and professional lives, he tries to accept the criteria of normal society and reaches out to a young female colleague. As their friendship develops with mutual understanding he finds he can express to a friend something of his own dreams and needs.During a class in the school his pupils start talking about homosexuality. For the first time in his life Jim is forced to openly admit his homosexuality. This provokes a reproach by the schoolmaster who pretends some moderation in dealing with taboos. To Jim it means a new self-consciousness and the hope of finding a more meaning full life.
