Timoti, a villageboy, falls in love with chipo,a respectable girl. Timoti wants to marry Chipo but her father does not approve because Timoti is unemployed. To please her father and thereby win his sweetheart, Timoti goes off to the city to find a job. Once there, however, he forgets Chipo and falls in love with a city girl. Meanwhile, Timoti´s father in the village has negotiated and paid the bride price to Chipo´s father thus binding her to the father of her sweetheart whose return she awaits. Timoti learnsof the marriage and vows not to return to claim his bride. Chipo goes to the city and finds Timoti merrymaking with his girlfriend. She refuses to return to Timoti, claiming that it is not him but his father who has married her. Chipo seeks help from her parents but they insist that, according to custom, she must go and stay with her husband. In despair, Chipo hangs herself. Her spirit continues to haunt Timoti. ( Ngozi is a Shona word that is rounghly translated as the spirit of a dead person taking revenge on the living).
