New German Design is the theme of a program produced by the Arts Department of the WDR. The director is Bob Rooyens from the Netherlands, who is well-known for his imaginative creativity and his electronic collages in many international light-entertainment programs. Art as entertainment! The rooms, furniture, lamps and fashions – most of which only exist in unique examples – really are works of art. Individual items often of strange origin, made of the most unlikely materials. “New from old” is the motto of some designers, while others cannot process their material brutally enough; no effect is too astonishing. The artist-designers give expression to their ideas in memorable manifestos, introduces by Christian Borngräber (the author of various architectural and design-historical programs for the WDR.) He is the author and unconventional anchor-man of this show. He introduces new German design in an entertaining fashion. His irony is means of “alienation”, leaving the decision to the viewer’s taste. Design- to b or not to be?
