During the heated debate on nuclear arms in autumn 1983 a young film director writes to his father, asking him to relate his experience of war. The father is hesitant, afraid of exposing his fears and emotions to a younger generation, that may only be interseted in condemning him. Out of this correspondence a film is born, which seeks out the past, attempts to close the generation gap and argues that “we must remember, if history is not to repeat itself”.A highly personal and sensitive approach of a 26 year-old to his own history and the very German theme of “Vergangenheitsbewältigung”. The result is a film which not only tells an individual German story, but which succeeds in making a universally valid statement against war.
