A history car making at Cowley Oxford (one of the largest manufacturing centres in England). This history is told by the car makers themselves, and tells the story of the famous Morris Motors factory and the changes in the work, the unions and the organization of the company. It is the story of the inner workings of the British economy. We opened a shop in the main shopping centre at Cowley, and people were encouraged by an extensive publicity campaign to come in and participate, to look at the materials and interviews already gathered, to add to or contradict information given to the project, to share their experiences and to take part in the programmes as they were recorded. Before transmission the programmes were shown to the car makers and their suggestions and criticisms incorporated. On transmission 20 phone lines were open to receive new interviewees, which were then incorporated in later programme. All interviewees received a copy of interviews on video with a transcript, and took part in discussion in program 5.
