In the GDR, writer Uwe Saeger was one of the awkward, critical observers of everyday society. He translated his experiences into novels, stories and plays. Television was almost forbidden territory, as his perspective was at odds with official ideology. Only in 1990 / 91 was a film made from a Saeger scenario which dealt directly with contemporary life in his country. The GDR had by now ceased to exist, but the author did not lose his critical stance after the political changes. He registered with great accuracy the new tensions and conflicts in his region of north Germany. Thus the text for “Landscape with Thorns” was born. Saeger tells a harsh, even brutal tale. Four young people in East Germany turn murderers and end up by killing each other. They run amok because they are frustrated, bored, isolated with themselves and their problems
