Over the course of a year TV3 was given access to all Catalan prisons and was able to gather first-time broadcast images of life in prison. The result of that effort is a 7-part series that allows viewers a glimpse of the personal stories of those living a life behind bars. Catalonia has one of the highest prison populations in Europe. Currently there are 10,400 people imprisoned, and robbery is its main crime (53%), bringing with it an average sentence of eight years. On the other side of the bars are 4,000 prison staff. The programme provides a look at how prisons function. While the documentary attempts to provide a view of the circumstances in which these prisoners find themselves, it is also clear that behind every crime committed there is a victim who has suffered. The programme avoids playing up to morbid curiosity about prison and prison life.
