These 4 programmes have been selected to demonstrate the various techniques used to present the Diary for Television. Breakwell records the side events of daily life: on the street where he lives, in the restaurant, his home town with memories from his childhood and an unexpected brush with a Parade through the City. Our appreciation of the humorous, bizarre and often bleak moment that happen around us are made more resonant through Breakwell’s view. A visual artist, Breakwell was invited by the producer to make the work unique to the medium for television as a collaboration, instead of being the subject of a report. The programmes appeared as autonomous works and the running times were dictated by the content rather than by a transmission slot. A particular transmission period was chosen so that topical events could be included (e.g. The London Marathon).
