Hurray a homosexual?
This dramtised documentary in three parts, was produced for IKON-Television. The series has a s its subject homosexuality and the opinions about it in our society. By means of a story a young teacher who experiences difficulties in school because of his sexual nature, various social, psychological and religious aspects of this situation are examined. None of the characters in this film are professional actors or actresses.In the first part the main character, who comes form a big city, relates why he has applied for a job in a church school in a small community. During his interview for the job hi did not disclose his homosexuality. As is usual, he is given a temporary appointment initially. When during this period, he reveals that he is a homosexual, the headmaster points out to him that this in itself does not necessarily have to create problems, but that it is desirable that the teacher adapts himself somewhat to the standards of a small community. It then becomes evident that the main character is having a relationship with a young man about his own age, whom he has met at judo classes. The parents of this boy vehemently oppose the relationship. He is forced to leave the parental home. During a social evening at the judo-school the young men dance together. This cause a stir. Parents send complaints to the headmaster. It is agreed that at a joint meeting of parents, school board and the teacher, it will be decided whether his temporary appointment can still be changed into a permanent one.The second episode shows the discussion during a parents’ meeting. During this discussion a number of opinions and prejudices of the parents are expressed. The teacher is given an opportunity to react. The school board, which has to make a final decision about the permanent appointment, announces that this has to be made as soon as possible.In the third episode the teacher talks about the unrest which has developed in his class. His relationship too, appears to be suffering. During a church service the minister, who has become involved in the situation, makes his views known indirectly. In interviews with the various people involved, they indicate whether their feelings have, in the meantime, changed. At the end of the programme it is announced whether the teacher has received his permanent appointment.
