Late 19th century in the German Empire: Luise von Kummerveldt and her aristocratic father live together with their servants in a moated castle. Luise’s passion is literature; she wants to become a writer. Just as she is about to send her manuscript to a publisher, her father dies and Luise’s younger brother Veit returns and becomes her legal guardian. To demonstrate his power, he wants to force his strong-willed sister to marry the simple-minded Count of Mogge and give up writing. 'Not on your life!' Luise rebels and attracts the interest of the attractive young Dr. Büchner. He falls in love with her. But Luise is not in a sentimental mood. She has more important things to do, since her manuscript was rejected as the work of a woman. Luise realizes that her room for maneuver in a patriarchal society is tighter than the corset she has to wear. Her desire for freedom and desperation drive her to increasingly rebel against her brother. Open conflict ensues, culminating in them reviving an old game from their childhood: the so-called maneuvers. For Luise, everything is at stake!
