GAYELLE is the kind of programme that each public television network should make: a reflection of a community’s artistic and cultural life style. Apart from illustrating a specific culture – that of Trinidad and Tobago – shown through recordings, entertainment and ordinary people’s comments, the selected programme offers itself to a review by the public, opens the door to discussions and tackles a basic issue for all public networks: the invasion of national airwaves by foreign programmes; ratings versus profitability, as well as the right to express a national identity.
