FRECKLED RICE is a drama about a young boy’s coming of age and his coming to terms with his Chinese American heritage. Growing up in Boston’s Chinatown in the 60’s, Joe So finds both confusion and misunderstanding in his bilingual, bi-cultual environment. FRECKLED RICE shows how Chinatown is a world where Joe fells both safe and uncomfortable. It has both familiarity and friendships, yet because he is a “Jook Sen”, an Americanized Chinese, he is often ill at ease at traditional Chinese gatherings. The film shows us, in an intimate and distinctive way, Joe’s two worlds: on the on hand, “Screamin’ Jay Hawkins”, “My Three Sons”, and rock’ n roll, a world which his older brother embraces and which his traditional immigrant father refuses to understand; and on the other hand, Chinatown, a place whose meaning he comes to share with his grandfather. Using a bilingual script and authentic Chinatown settings in Boston, FRECKLED RICE interweaves a story of two cultures to give us a clearer understanding of the unique experience called Asian America.
