FRAGMENTS D’EXIL is the outcome of a meeting between the director and Lew Bogdan, the French-born son of Polish immigrants and a theatre-man in Paris. The plot of the film takes place in the potassium salt mining country near Mulhouse, Alsace. The film is a story of exile and departure (that of Kowalski family) and also the story of a quest by Jacek Kowalski, a musician aged 30 in 1982, the Alsace-born son of immigrants. This film may surprise INPUT participants by its changes in pace, by certain scenes in which actors address the camera directly and by the presentation of sequences in a photo-story style to depict the incredible experiences undergone by Jacek’s close relatives (and perceived by him through dim childhood memories). But that is part of the intimate and joyful (or nostalgic) tone of this bitter-sweet family chronicle.
