Far from Stockholm and the other great cities, there exists another Sweden. A remote and barren area, inhabited by an obstinate people, not overly given to talk. These people are as strong and gnarled as the pines that grow from the soil, which is iced up for six months every year. They work hard for their livelihood, and their villages are scattered wide apart. At same time, their sense of justice and liberty has become highly developed over the centuries. For hundreds of years, they have been independent farmers craftsmen. The DUEL IN MINDWINTER is a vendetta between small holder Egon Lundin and the National Swedish Roads Administration concerning what the latter regards as an illegally built and unsuitably located milk churn stand.DUEL IN MINDWINTER is an allegory on the small man’s fight against the power of the authorities, individuality contra collectivism. The author/director chose the visual form, i-e-, without spending many words, to portray the character of a small village in Northern Sweden, where the hard climate has taught people to rely on each other.
