In a theatre and in front of an audience whose active involvement is essential the journalist is charge of this show, Gad Lerner, tackles one of the many Italian issues of relevant interest in this specific moment: racism, unemployment, religious freedom, housing, mafia und so weiter. “deep North” is like a live journalistic investigation on the making with the members of the audience testifying on the different aspects of the story. The general theme of this series is the breaking down of Italy in its components, its national identity, as seen in the perspective of the North, its most developed region where the high standard of living evoques separatist temptations. This part dealing with the effects of immigration in Milano has half of the audience made of immigrants from countries outside the EEC asking for jobs, housing, schools and religious freedom. The other half of the audience consists representatives of the official bodies involved from Margherita Boniver, the minister for Immigration, to the chairmen of the local councils who are very vocal against the newcomers
