'Dad' is a brutally frank and unsentimental examination of a family thrown into chaos by mental illness, drug and alcohol abuse. Roger Triffo seemed to have everything going for him in the 1970s. A house in the suburbs, a white picket fence, a wife and four kids – a future. Then he went off the rails, leaving a stunned family trying to understand what happened. In 'Dad', filmmaker Chris Triffo explores the disintegration of his own father´s life from successful family man to street person convicted of attempting to murder his own mother. The children Roger left behind have faced their own share of adversity – three have had battles with substance abuse. All have had trouble healing the scars. This documentary is a journey of discovery into the mind of that man and a son´s search for answers. Throughout this documentary, Roger is confronted by his son with the questions that have haunted him most of his life. Why did you leave the family? Why didn´t you look us up over the past 25 years? Did you ever think about your family? Why did you try to kill your own mother? The search for answers to these deeply personal and poignant questions make a bleak and courageous film.
