“Confessions of a readaholic” is a fictional docu-drama featuring Minneapolis humour writer James Lileks as a man who has become addicted to reading. “Confessions” follows the story of Lilek’s addiction from its seemingly harmless beginnings (“sure I read a lot in college, but everybody did… It was the social milieu”) Through his quick downward spiral (In which his problem reading costs him his job and his girlfriend). To the depraved depths of despair (“I had to sell all my liquor just to buy books”). Happily, Lileks hooks up with bibliotherapist Dr. Bunny Mueller, and is well on his way to leading a normal, if not entirely word-free life as “Confessions” comes to an end. “Confessions of a readaholic” was produced as part of “The great KTCA Readathon”, A twelve hour live broadcast celebrating The Joys of Reading, this extravaganza of marathon reading aired on KTCA-TV, Minneapolis/St. Paul, on September 13, 1986 as the kick-off to a year-long literacy project, part of PBS’ and ABC’s “plus” (“Project literacy United States”) program. The “Readathon” was enthusiastically received by the community and was selected for a 1987 Twin cities mayors’ art award.
