A documentary on animal rights - sound, earnest and predictable? Not in the hands of the brilliant and unconventional filmmaker, John Kastner. 'Chickens Are People Too' is a documentary black comedy about the secret war between the chicken industry and animal rights activists. On one side is Karen Davis, a woman who gave up everything to protect poultry, now a leading chicken rights activist. On the other side is Bruce, a beleaguered chicken farmer who won't reveal his full identity because he fears violence by chicken activists. Caught in the middle of this battle for our tastebuds, three time Emmy-winning producer/director John Kastner tries to hold onto his appetite for the bird in the face of both horrifying and hilarious revelations. The dual between the two sides is highly entertaining and extremely disturbing, as the film swings from the very dark to the very dippy. The film has an unconventional structure and approach, undergoing dramatic shifts in style, perspective and moral view as it builds to its unusual ending. The is one film that ruffles your feathers and gets under your skin.
