Booker

Set in the rural American South in 1865-66, during the final stages of the Civil War and its immediate aftermath, this drama focuses on a nine year-old black slave boy, Booker T. Washington, and his struggle for an opportunity to learn to read and for relief from despair born of oppression. Inevitably, Booker’s naive quest for pride and dignity comes into conflict with the harsh racial and economic realities of the times. But Booker is persevering and resourceful, and with the woman, he takes his first tentative steps on what was to become an amazing journey. BOOKER is based on a true story told in Washington’s famous autobiography, Up From Slavery, and recently amplified by historical scholarship.
