“Black and white” is a series of four half-hour documentaries shot in Bristol, England, in the summer of 1987. They follow the progress of two reporters, one black, one white, in the search for a place to live, a job, and entertainment. Every interview was filmed secretly by the reporters, using a small video camera hidden in a sports bag. The four films show a high level of open racial discrimination; for example, o third of the hotels visited treated the white reporter far more favorably than the black reporter. The four films also form a narrative, as the relationship between the two reporters develops in front of the camera. Viewers see the pain and humiliation of discrimination as faced by the black reporter, and the pressure that builds up on the white reporter to confront a situation worse than he had imagined.
