BIRTH OF NATION is set in a large comprehensive school where children teachers daily battle against the odds to get through the day. When the new English teacher defies the old authoritarian teaching methods of the school, he finds himself at the centre of a major controversy. Meanwhile, former pupils, disillusioned by the dole queues, gather threateningly at the school gates. BIRTH OF NATION was one of the films written by David Leland on the theme of education. Together the films offered a radical perspective on a subject of public interest and consequently stimulated wide debate. They attracted considerable attention both for their controversial ideas and excellent productions.
