The BRYANT family are in need. They live on the 15th floor of an inner-city tower block. JIMMY BRYANT is unemployed. They are behind with the rent. The final straw is when the Social Security stop his benefit to reassess him. He has a row with his wife, CAROL, and storms out of the flat.Much later he walks up the fifteen floors only to find that vandals had stopped the lift. Carol shouts at him –the youngest child cries. Jimmy hits him till he stops. The police are called. Jimmy is sent to prison for two years. The children are put into care, a long term fostering is arranged. BILLY is very withdrawn, but the foster parents make steady progress with him. JUDITH BRYANT wants to eb with her mother. The social worker changes and this worsens the problems the foster parents are having with Judith. They cannot cope.Jimmy Bryant has been released from prison. His wife has a new house on a new estate. They want the children back and are prepared to go to court to get them. The Social Services Department would rather split them up and encourages the foster parents with the idea that they should think of having Billy on his own. In the end the father’s threat of court action, together with other uncertainties make the Department send the children back to him.
