The dawn breaks out over a mexican hacienda. Surrounded by all manner of half-packed objects, a middle-aged man with Latin-American features meditates, smokes, drinks and imagines. At this side lies a music score. “Moctezuma-Storia per Musica”. A Caribbean mulatto, his friend, majordomo and accomplice, hums the tune of one of the latest popular songs from the new world and in so doin, asks himself a question with no possible philosophical answer, which is phrased in such a way that it is virtually untranslatable: “Mamá, yo quiero saber de dónde son los cantantes …”. These two characters embark on a journey which takes them through Mexico, Cuba, the Caribbean, Europe, in both time and music, the self-same question returning to them constantly: “¿ De dónde son los cantantes …?
