Artemisia

A docu-drama based on the life of the Renaissance painter, Artemisia Gentileschi who was raped as a young woman by Agostino Tassi, her teacher of perspective and father´s friend and colleague. Artemisia survived the rape and the subsequent trial in 1610 during which she was tortured to ascertain if she was telling the truth. This documentary drama is based on the transcripts of that trial and on letters written by Artemisia. The film explores the reasons why few women artists have achieved greatness and how little women´s lives have changed. It is the story of a woman who triumphed over adversity to become one of the greatest women painters in the history of art. The documentary features an interview with Germaine Geer.
