MRS. KENT enters the hospital to have her appendix removed and shares a room with ELVA MITCHELL, an irritable older white woman who cannot accept her black doctor and ides her fear of death under a veneer of cold-hearted selfishness. But ELVA reminds SANDY of her own mother who died in the same hospital, died as alone and lonely as ELVA. SANDY befriends the woman and convinces the other APPLES to donate blood for ELVA’s operation. Her affection and under-standing changed ELVA’s lonely terror into peaceful resignation. She welcomes DOCTOR WILSON’s support near the end and dies with grace. SANDY loses yet another loved one, but this time MRS. KENT and DOCTOR WILSON are there to comfort her.Produced by Rainbow TV Works, “THE RIGHTEOUS APPLES” presents the reality of lower-middle-class kids in a newly multi-ethnicized neighborhood, dealing with the attitudes, the values and the pressures of today’s society. The series seeks to provide solutions to racial conflicts and misunderstandings. The series revolves around a recently formed music group, “THE RIGHTEOUS APPLES”, composed of five high school students who live in a newly integrated Boston neighborhood. The leader of the group is BIG NECK, streetwise, naturally inclined toward theatrics and street-corner jamming and in his estimate, the consummate ladies’ man. SANDY BURNS is 15 and the “baby apple”. She’s naive, a “pop historian” and has an absorbing interest in the occult. SAMUEL ROSENCRANTZ, aka D. C. JUNIOR, marries his Jewish heritage to a hip, streetwise black savvy he’s learned through his love of black rhythm and blues. Less streetwise, highly opinionated, but a vital contributor to the group’s broadening perspective, GLORETTA is a honor student and a natural music talent who places the group a close fourth behind her studies, her yoga and ice cream.
