Am I lying or what
A play about an “ordinary” woman’s life. Based on 36-year old Jytte’s private, social and political background, a finely-shaded but sympathetic portrait is painted of Jetty as person a person –as well as a picture of the conflicts which often face women. In a series of sequences, Jytte (played by Little Hansen) relates her life straight to the camera –her childhood in the country, the school years, jobs as a maid on large farms, moving to the capital as a 17-year old, falling in love and marrying René, and finally her three children a and a three-room flat.If we accept Jytte’s story, then she is satisfied with the hole of her life. And she is, because the story of her life is free of contradictions. But a series of flashbacks, which interrupt her story at certain points, show important episodes in her life which happened completely differently to what she has related. They have been in fact full of contradictions. Like most people, Jytte is lying either consciously or unconsciously. She has pushed the problems aside in the name of respectability and because she is afraid that she may not live up to other people’s picture of her.Jytte’s life is placed in relationship to society as a whole and the political events which have been decisive for it. Jytte therefore becomes the link between a series of documentary inserts which –with the authors’ interpretative commentary –portray the historic reality which has firmed her background.Another direct comment by the authors on Jytte’s life –and specially that part of it which is determined by the fact that she is a woman –is to be found in the play’s songs which are performed by Birgit Brüel.
