What did actually happen while the Harris family were on their way home from Magritte at the Tate Galley in London? Tom Stoppard, the English dramatist, well known for his thought provoking “Rosenkratz and Gyldenstejerne Are Dead” and “Every Good Boy Deserves Favour” has sometimes written more concise and witty pieces as is the case with this television drama. He deals with one of his favourite themes –nothing is quite what it appears to be. We mustn’t be led astray by the investigation of a puzzling crime which Inspector Foot has started. Underneath apparent confusion there is a concreted structure of logical explanation. The Belgian surrealist Magritte, who has provided the inspiration for the title, has also given the director Palle Wolfsberg the idea of using the television screen’s possibility of splitting up our perception of reality.
