This is an account of Bombardier Vic Williams who went AWOL during the Gulf War for reasons of conscience. While on the run, he gave “Heart of the Matter” an interview which was broadcast the following week. There was some concern at the time as to “Heart of the Matter” giving an army deserter air time.Bombardier Vic Williams handed himself over to the military and was court-martialed in September 1991. He was charged and found guilty on three counts: 1. Desertion, 2. Speaking at a Peace Rally in Hyde Park and 3. Appearing on “Heart of the Matter”.The enclosed “Heart of the Matter” was shown at the court martial as part of his defense and Olga Edridge, the Series Producer, was called as a defense witness.Vic Williams was given a sentence of 14 months imprisonment.
