After having worked some years in Germany, Antonio returns to Spain. He arrives by train, pulling in to the Chamartín (Madrid) station to catch a connecting train to his girlfriend’s village. He sits in the station café, with a rather cheap looking girl the only other person around. As he makes a phone call, Antonio sees a tough looking, no-good character approach her. They have a violent argument, which ends with the guy stabbing the girl and making a run for it. Antonio rushes over to her side, but it is too late. He has just managed to pull the knife out of her chest when the bartender appears. The bartender freaks, caught by surprise and automatically lifts his hands high over his head. Antonio panics, guiltily holding the bloody knife in his hand. He runs panic-stricken out of the station, leaving all his bags behind. In his mad getaway he slips into an apartment building entrance where he sees that a third-floor apartment is for rent. He hears the wailing of police sirens approaching and makes a quick decision to go up and check out the apartment. Marisa, the second-floor neighbour , shows him the apartment for rent, without suspecting anything.
