They are between 8 and 18 years old and live in the streets of Rio de Janeiro. Homeless and poor, they have lost contact with their families and try to earn their living in various ways. But besides being paid less than the boys for similar work, they have to face situations of violence and sexual abuse. Out of school and of the regular work market, without reliable informations, with no protection from the law, no access to medical care, these girls increase the statistics that point to pregnancy as the sixth cause of adolescent mortality rate. This video documents the experiences of some of these girls, trying to reconstruct their life histories. Their statements unveil their desires, their fantasies, their plans and points of view. To listen to them, to watch the way they live and struggle is a touching experience that puts into question ready-made ideas and prejudices, compelling to solidarity. There is a challenge: how to behave and act after this awareness is raised, this new understanding of their situation?
