What is a landmark? An historical monument? A geographic marker? A notable figure? An event? Should landmarks be preserved? Why? In spring 1997, ten youths ages 9 to 18, armed with camaras, keen eyes, open minds and a string of questions, set out to capture the landmaks of their personal lives and neighborhoods in Mexico City. The result is a provocative visual commentary on the multiple layers of values, histories, and cultures that make up our modern urban environments. Honest, expressive, real, and unusual, this collection of images prompts the question - what landmarks matter to you? What would you preserve for the future? Pictures of Mexico City, like its sister projects in Los Angeles, Cape Town, Mumbai, and Paris, is part of a global initiative by the Getty Conservation Institute to create an alliance between the general public and conservation professionals to help protect the world´s cultural heritage.
