Truth Be Told is a six part series of one hour documentaries made for the SABC that takes a visceral look at six individual stories of political activists killed during apartheid while fighting for the liberation of South Africa. Each episode features a child of the dead activist who becomes the main narrator of the story. In this episode, 34-year-old Thabang Mabuza’s mother Phila Portia Ndwandwe, a Military Commander for the ANC was tortured and killed by South Africa’s former apartheid security police in 1988 when he was just 5 months old. Today he calls her his Breastfeeding Warrior. Can he reconcile the trauma of her death as he goes in search for answers as to why his mother was killed? As past, present and future merge he will look at the question, was his mother’s sacrifice worth it or in vain? The role of the country’s historical Truth and Reconciliation Commission is highlighted to give context to this poignant story of a liberation heroine. Importantly those who were left behind to pick up the pieces like her son Thabang will ventilate how he has been dealing with the impact of trans-generational trauma, justice and reconciliation and the process of healing.
