Foster children - a charged expression, a delicate subject. How does one present a truthful and insightful picture when the whole truth cannot be told? When some of those involved cannot be shown on screen? When one of the dads is suspected of sexual assault, a point that cannot even be mentioned in the programme during the ongoing criminal investigation? How do you teach a 5-year-old to love a 'new' mother, even if that new mother may be the child's biological mother, although the child has not lived with her since infancy? And how does it feel to have to give up a child you have raised as your own since it was 10 months old? 'I never thought it would be this hard', says foster mother Ulrika. This programme does not shy away from powerful emotions. And are there any emotions more powerful than those between parent and child? How catastrophic is it for a child to believe itself unloved by its parents? And how can someone choose between two mothers? The programme takes no position - except through its images, which unrelentingly take the side of the child. We meet foster parents Ulrika and Thomas, three foster children and those children's biological parents.
