The film gives an overlook on the work of the Serapion-theater, starting in the year 1980. The story is structured in three parts showing the different periods in the work of the ensemble: the art-figure period, the period of multi-figuring and grotesque overdoing and lastly realism in control. The three parts are also pointed out through scenic interruptions ( the break-down of the wall, the lowering of the iron curtain). The insight in the work of the Serapion-theater is on one side tied to a group of players waiting for their entré (PATT) and on the other side to a group of elderly gentlemen wanting to join in as an audience in a short fairy-tale (A BAO A QUE). The old gentlemen walk their path through the world of this theatre until they at last, as it happens, open up their minds and experience they transformation of the work, which mostly is recognized by the audience. So it is they way through the art-figures, the grotesque and overdone to the ironic realism of a BAO A QUE – and at the end a part of totality.
