A sleeping dancer imagines a fantastic landscape. She dreams of dancing in space that the mind creates. Clouds envelope her. Streams of steam swirl through the air. She is in the water. She is creating the rain, and it falls on the pond. The medium of video is based on electronic signals, and it is possible to combine camera recorded images with abstract graphics made by electronic synthesis. Using an original piano composition, written and performed by Danish born Vibeke Sorensen, the program develops a dance performance into a visual reflection of the music. The dance was filmed on super 8 movie film which offered hand-held camera convenience, and was transferred to video for processing. Processed and synthetic landscapes were created in the video lab for recombination with th4e dance. The images were edited to the music. The entire process spanned an eight-month period during which the artist visited a series of production facilities including the Art Dept. of the University of Maryland – Baltimore County, the Video Synthesis Laboratory of Renssellaer Polytechnic Institute, Video Dept. of the California College of Arts and Crafts, the Music Dept. of the University at Albany, MRC Films and EUE Video in New York City.
