Gerard Gbeyo from The Ivory Coast had been in Sweden just over a year when he stepped off a bus one night in September 1996 in the little Swedish community of Klippan. As he walks along the street, two racists come up behind him. When he turns around and says 'How do you do?' he is stabbed in the heart and dies. Throughout the police interrogation following this widely publicised crime, Gerard Gbeyo was referred to simply as 'the negro'. Even in the subsequent trial of the racists, he appeared to be some anonymous person. The Swedish authorities had Gbeyo´s remains cremated – in violation of the traditions and culture of his homeland. His ashes were shipped in an urn to his relatives in The Ivory Coast. Documentary filmmaker Tom Alandh decided to find out who Gerard Gbeyo was and how he happened to be in Sweden. The result of Alandh´s efforts is this film, which depicts virtually Gbeyo´s entire life, tracing it from his home town to Europe: what he was like and where he was headed. The film was received with tremendous enthusiasm by viewers – and by the press.
