This two-part film provides a rare opportunity to see deep inside the mind of a mass murderer and to observe the disguises and deceptions of a psychopath – Kenneth Bianchi, the Los Angeles Hillside Strangler who raped, tortured and murdered 12 young women in 1978. It breaks new ground because Horizon producer Michael Barnes used a court order to obtain the original videotapes of Mr. Bianchi as he is interviewed by doctors appointed to assess his sanity. They conclude he is insane, a multiple personality whose ‘other self’ emerges in hypnosis and gleefully confesses to the crimes. It is both a piece of investigative journalism, a police thriller, psychiatric detective work and a profile of a killer who no-one thought could kill. Reviews: “Quite remarkable” (London Times); “One of the most compelling pieces of television I have never seen (Daily Express); “A startling piece of prize-winning work – steps right to the forefront of electronic journalism” (Christian Science Monitor); “A spectacular piece of work” (St Louis Post); “Magnificent” (Phil. Inquirer); “Outstanding” (Wall St. Jnl.); “Breaks new ground” (Medical News); “Once of the most compelling programmes PBS has ever televised” (Montreal Gazette).
