THE BODY: WORLDS AND WAYS is a result of a collaboration between graphic designer Ana Couto and a public television station WHYY. The short feature aired as part of the station’s daily series titled SPOTLIGHT. For the past two years, this series has teamed up area artists with television producers, creating opportunities for artists to expand their horizons while working in a new medium and bringing those artists new and larger audiences. At the same time, television producers and directors are exposed to new ways of envisioning productions. The idea for the program originated after a poster (designed by Ms. Couto) caused a sensation in Philadelphia. The work features a mermaid whose breasts were exposed. The poster upset many, who deemed it pornographic. We were interested in investigating the causes of this reaction. Why did the naked body seen to upset many people? What are some of the origins of the contemporary American attitude towards the human body? How can we produce a short program that does the subject justice, while maximizing both Ms. Couto’s graphic design skills as well as WHYY’s creative technical abilities? The spot was (and continues to be) well-received by viewers.
