In the year that Sydney hosted the Olympic Games, ABC-TV commissioned a team of notable Australian TV satirists (John Clarke, Gina Riley, Brian Dawe & Nicholas Bell) to devise a comedy series highlighing THE GAMES. Using a fictional 'Games Management Team' as a vehicle for comment on the progress of elaborated preparations for the real Olympic Games, comedian John Clarke played the 'head of Administration & Logistics' of a mythical group offering a wonderfully satirical insight into the workings of the Olympic Committee in Sydney in the lead-up to the 2000 Games. 'The Games', in parallel with the real-life Olympic Committee, created hilarious situations where whatever can go wrong will go wrong, with frightening regularity. Of the combined 26 episodes screened in 1999 and 2000, Episode 3 'The Apology' of the 2000 series exhibited a rare moment in Australian television history. With Australia's real-life Prime Minister, John Howard MP, avoiding an official Government commitment to a public apology to the nation's Indigenous Peoples for Australia's mistreatment of its Aboriginal population earlier last century, 'The Games' offered well-known real-life actor John Howard making an apology instead. The 'Apology Made By John Howard' became a cause-celebre among viewers across the nation because it echoed the mood of the nation about An Apology, and provided a surprisingly believable basis for expressing a genuine apology to Australia's Aboriginal people.
