What’s Happening to the News is the third programme in the four-part Frontline series called News War, a critical examination of the US news media. This episode focuses on the economic pressures on television news divisions and daily newspapers, as well as the challenges and opportunities posed by the Internet. The programme opens with the success of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show , a parody of cable and network TV news. Including interviews with Ted Koppel and Dan Rather, the programme reviews the decline in TV news standards and confronts the president of ABC News with questions about his current programme meming. It goes on to investigate the promise and the shortcomings of news on the Web and goes inside the embattled newsroom of the Los Angeles Times, one of the few US newspapers still covering major national and international stories. It tells the story of two dedicated editors, John Carroll and Dean Baquet, who face pressures from their corporate bosses in Chicago to deliver higher profits and cut costs by retrenching reporters.
