In the former German Democratic Republic (DDR), informers were spread throughout every part of society for the maintenance of peace and public security. Monika Haeger was an informer assigned to the Poppe family. Jonas, the boy in the Poppe family, became fond of her, unaware of the real nature of her interest in them. His parents were jailed as peace activists, in part as a result of Monika’s surveillance. With the collapse of East Germany, however, he discovered what she had been doing. Two years pass, and they meet again. Searching for a way to a new relationship in a new society, they begin a painful dialogue.The reformation of the political system; the hurt and confusion in people’s minds. How should one consider the things that were done out of a belief in a former system and a desire to work for its betterment? This program probes the question of what the state means to the individual citizen.
